One of the most unusual medals issued by the Society of Medalists, number 6 was sculpted by John Flanagan in 1932 with a bust of Aphrodite on one side and two nude male figures on the other, all finished in a luscious green verdigris. Early in his career, Flanagan worked for three years with the renowned sculptor, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, before studying in Paris. Later, he assisted Frederick MacMonnies on the statuary for the Columbian Exposition in Chicago. MacMonnies considered him the leading medalist in America.
