Savage is best known for a spectacular set of murals illustrating the history and lore of Hawaii commissioned by Matson Shipping Line for the S. S. Lurline, executed in the 1940s but not installed until the 1950s. However, he was a prolific painter and muralist, executing works for public buildings in Dallas, Chicago and Indiana, and for Columbia and Yale Universities. He often favored scenes, like "April," which contrasted figures in the foreground to an idyllic landscape behind. This is a particularly lovely example, with dusty-purple mountains and semi-diaphanous foliage providing a backdrop for mother and child. This painting retains its original exhibition label from the highly-regarded Ferargil Gallery in Manhattan, probably dating from 1936 when the gallery hosted an exhibition of Savage's work.
