Josef (or Joseph) Renier achieved considerable success as a sculptor in America during a period of extraordinary growth and prosperity. He studied in Europe and won the Prix de Rome, exhibited his work at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the National Academy of Design, and did sculptures for Brookgreen Gardens, the State of Texas, and the U.S. Post Office in Washington, D.C. This medal, commissioned by the Society of Medalists in 1941, presents a spectacular Art Deco image of a nude Prometheus paired with a great eagle. To punish Prometheus for bringing fire to mankind, Zeus chained him to a rock and sent an eagle to eat his liver.
