Spear Fishermen

A timeless image of comradery and primeval hunting, this 1940 lithograph shows two nude figure kneeling amidst a line of reeds rimming the edge of open water. In the distance ducks have taken flight. The spears these figures hold tell a simple story: they are looking to bring home a load of fish. All the surfaces in this print are velvety and soft, including the limpid clouds overhead and the lush waterflowers amidst the grass and reeds below. John McClellan, the artist, was born in London but later lived in New York state and was a member of the famous Woodstock Art Association.
