A bronze medallion with gorgeous bas relief and a poignant message by Chester Beach for the Society of Medalists in 1937. This moving text accompanies two scenes with multiple nude figures, sculpted by a brilliant artist known for his langurous, beautiful figures. The full text reads: "In peace sons bury their fathers; in war the fathers bury their sons." Beach studied in Paris at the Acadamie Julien in 1904, and in Rome from 1911 to 1912, where he learned to work in materials ranging from silver and bronze to stone. His most monumental commission was the Fountain of the Waters, placed at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
