Harris Strong was, indisputably, the most ambitious and important tile craftsman that America produced in the post-World War II era. First in the Bronx and later in Maine, he supervised a workshop that produced thousands of murals, each composed of multiple tiles, brilliantly glazed and often mounted on hardwood panels. Some of Strong's output -- such as New York skylines and French street scenes -- became somewhat predictable, but some works -- such as this large reconception of a Baroque map, complete with goddesses and dragons -- were remarkable in conception and execution. This piece is enormously ambitious and exhibits some of the finest and most gorgeous glazes at Strong's command.
