One of Vicke Lindstrand's characterisitically elegant, stylized nude figures for the Orrefors glass company in Sweden at the height of the Art Deco era in 1939, this piece features an engraved male figure playing a llife-sized harp, decorating a thick-walled vase with wavy interior glass walls. The figure, with long legs and arms, and bent head, is almost "swimming" amidst the undulating form of the vase. This piece is a pristine example of the extraordinary engraved glass perfected by Orrefors in the mid-20th century, designed by the company's leading designer just before he moved to the Uppsala-Ekeby firm in 1940. As Alistair Duncan points out in his definitive book on Orrefors, Lindstrand developed a line of thick-walled crystal glass at the company, and "by applying an undulating surface to his vases, he generated a heightened illusion of movement within the crystal."
