Characteristic of Emlen Etting's fascination with lithe, nude men in dynamic poses -- and clearly influenced by his fascination with ballet and modern dance after World War II -- this piece shows a floating or falling man in an abstract sky-blue field. Etting exhibited, over a long lifetime of painting, in more than 30 one-man and multiple-artist shows in Philadelphia, New York, Paris and elsewhere. He traveled in a prestigious circle of artists, writers and wealthy clients, and his works were purchased by museums and collectors such as Walter Annenberg, Helen Hayes, Mary Clark Rockefeller.
