This medal depicts -- like something from a classic Works Progress Administration mural -- a scene of urban energy and industrious labor, all to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the New York Building Congress in 1961. Central to the scene are a noble couple -- the man shirtless and poised to work with T-square, compass and bricklayer's trowel in hand, while a classically-garbed woman is seated placidly with book and strongbox. Since the medal was created for the New York Building Congress' 40th anniversary in 1961, the background is crowded with images from New York: Art Deco buildings, the Brooklyn Bridge, and a steelworker signaling a crane to place an I-beam to rest. The sculptor was Leo Friedlander, one of the most active and prominent of America's sculptors in the Art Deco era.
