"Sommerphantasie"

This delightful summertime idyll depicts three classical figures led by a nude flutist walking along a hilltop which overlooks a lush river valley carpeted with trees. Riedel's engraving suggests that it is late afternoon and the three young men are heading home after gathering armfuls of wildflowers. Each of their brows are crowned with fragile blooms. Their bodies are richly lit by the late day sun, which has already been overtaken by deep shadows in the valley below. This scene is the stuff of poetry and Mahler symphonies! Riedel was a German-Swiss artist who studied in Munich in the 1910s.
