"Jacob Wrestling with the Angel"

This very strong lithograph dating from 1946 depicts a nude Jacob holding a moon-faced angel in a neck grip, with a ray from heaven casting a harsh light upon the stark landscape like a spotlight in a film noir. Although both figures are powerfully drawn there is a strange placidity to this picture; Jacob faces away from the viewer, and the angel's quietude and outstretched hand seems to suggest that he is not exerting his full ability to overpower.
