Sketch of Male Nude

This handsome pencil sketch on tracing paper was drawn by Rosella Hartman, an important printmaker active between 1923 and 1959. It was executed in 1934 when Hartman was studying in Munich on a John Simon Guggenheim Award, just as Hitler was beginning his rise to power. The modeling of the figure gives it great strength and solidity, and the drawing makes an equally strong statement.
