This is an extraordinary print, one of a series by Arthur Paunzen, a prominent artist in early 20th century Austria, giving strongly sensuous images to abstract "classical" music. In this case, Paunzen is giving us his fantastic view of the first movement of Beethoven's great Third (Eroica) Symphony. The most prominent feature is a lean, tall nude man, facing away from the viewer, holding a battle trumpet to his lips. In the background, a long line of nude men riding horseback crosses a distant ridgeline. Paunzen makes masterful use of strong black and gray shades, with huge piles of clouds in the sky and a strong wedge of jet black foreground setting off the nude figure. The print is signed and dated "1918."
