Pair of Nudes

This pair of voluptuous and gorgeously-colored watercolors were created by Tony Chen in 1965. Chen was a noted illustrator in the 1950s and 1960s, and prepared these pieces with pencil and watercolor on pebbled heavy paper. Chen presents his models as relaxed and sensuous figures, and uses strong colors that establish definite moods. One figure is executed in a saturated, passion fruit tone, the other is a symphony of sienas, grays and chocolates. Each has minor, stray watercolor drips or smudges on the margins that add to their informal quality. Each piece is signed, one with a distinctive stamp with Chinese character.
