Finished with a bright, coppery patina, this medallion sculpted by Daniel Hord has a fantastic air about it, showing nude figures with bandannaed heads on each side, one planting seeds, and the other floating over a field with sprouting corn. The theme involves Native American figures with an air of magical realism about them, which may reflect his many years of work in California, and his study at the Universidad Mexico. This piece was the 41st issue of the Society of Medalists in 1950. Hord exhibited widely and won a number of prizes in the 1930s and 1940s, and designed a fountain in famed Balboa Park in San Diego.
