Matador and Bull

Famous for his quirky and often sensual depiction of male and female figures -- with paper or pottery as his medium -- this example is both characteristic and exceptional in Cocteau's oeurve. The focus on the male figure is typical for Cocteau, but the bullfighting subject matter a bit more unusual, and was probably occasioned by his visit to a bullfight with Picasso in the late 1950s. The black figures of man and animal are highlighted by crayon in shades of buff, pale green and bluish purple. This piece is dated 1959.
