A master of sculptural bas relief, especially the low reliefs used for medallic work and finely-detailed bronze objects, Ferdinand Levillain was greatly admired in his day for giving a modern interpretation to Greek and Roman subjects. This stunning gilded bronze urn is literally alive with many scores of nude male figures surrounding eight medallic scenes from Greek mythology. Each and every figure is brilliantly realized, bringing Levillain almost to the level of the great Renaissance sculptors. The urn is marked with the sculptor's name; although there is no foundry mark, Levillain had a strong relationship with the Barbidienne foundry, which probably cast this work.
