Grooming Moose

One of Finland's leading sculptors during the Art Deco and mid-century eras, Mantynen loved to depict the wild animals of the Finnish north, including moose, deer and wild cats. This example, signed and dated 1935, is an especially fine, stylized example. Mantynen creates a wonderful contrast beween the magnificence and grandeur of the moose's antlers with the quietude of its grooming.
