Under the Tree Artist: Lear, John B.Nationality: USA Time Period: Circa 1950 Dimensions: 14" high x 11" wide Type of Work: Drawing Medium: Drawing Price: Upon request Plus shipping and insurance Over his 70-plus year career, Lear focused again and again on nude or half-nude figures set in fantastic or exotic environments such as the circus, carnival, deserted beach, or Dali-esque setting. At first this early drawing seems to show a perfectly normal genre scene, with a couple quietly conversing under a tree. However, Lear characteristically adds a surreal element: the weirdly-shaped tool carried by the half-nude male figure. This drawing demonstrates Lear's mastery of hard pencil applied to paper with a polished, clay finish. The male figure's torso is perfectly proportioned, but is also more elongated than the stockier figures Lear favored in later years. To Order: Click on the "Add to Cart" button above.
