Entered into the Rochester-Finger Lakes Exhibition (sponsored by the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery) in the 1940s, this Gauguinesque canvas retains its original exhibition label. Though the subject matter has a bit of the macabre, the artist’s luscious color palette, lively depiction of trees and gravestones, and her whimsical simplification of man, woman and dog, give this painting enormous appeal. Mays is best known for her association with the Glidden Pottery in Alfred, New York, in the 1940s and 1950s.
