Andromeda and Perseus

This striking pair of terra cotta panels were the creation of Gleb Derujinsky, one of the most important artists to emigrate from Russia to America in the early 20th century. Derujinsky studied in Petrograd and later Paris before he settled in New York, and won many prizes and accolades for his public work, including a figure of "Eve" exhibited at the 1926 Sesquicentennial Exposition in Philadelphia, and the "Europa and the Bull" fountain group created for the 1939 New York World's Fair. This pair of panels are unique pieces, exhibiting both bas relief and incised design. The chained Andromeda figure, for example, exquisitely captures the nude female form; in the background, Derujinsky incised Greek temples and other details into the clay.
