Newsprint Mill

Executed in beautiful, muted colors, this scene of laborers in a newsprint mill creating the raw material for newspapers across the land probably served as the study for a wall mural for a newspaper office lobby. Painted by Herbert Feinberg in 1953, as the golden era of mural painting in America was fading, it nonetheless captures the energy and complexity of the modern factory. Everything is included, from the delivery of logs cut from the forest, to the delivery truck taking paper away to the city. One especially wonderful touch is Feinberg's inclusion of a collage of newspaper front pages at the center right portion of the painting.
