This unusually large charger, with its lovely maize-and-corn glazes and stylized figure, represents one of Rockwell Kent's more important ventures into art for the masses. Faye Bennison from Vernon Kilns asked Kent to design several china patterns between 1938 and 1940, including the "Salamina" pattern here. However, much of the production went unsold, prompting department stores to return large quantities of dishes to Vernon. Consequently, larger pieces like this charger are rare.
