When a skilled sculptor collaborated with America's greatest fine art pottery studio in the early 20th century, the result could be stunning, as evidenced by this very fine vase by Rookwood Pottery featuring a classical frieze-like series of nude figures by Louise Abel. Scupted around 1920 and produced in small quantities, this design was offered in several alternative glazes in the early 1920s, including this beautiful, high-gloss inky glaze. Abel was born in Germany, and after immigrating to America worked for many years in Cincinnati, producing her own scuptures, plus a series of designs for Rookwood. This design (Number 2522) is one of her best.
