Shield with Baroque Battle Scenes

This is an extraordinary, late 19th century shield and sword ensemble, with high-relief Baroque scenes of nude soldiers and horses in close combat. Cast in very fine iron with a washed gilding effect, this piece is alive with countless fighting figures, each with the detailed musculature mastered by Northern European painters and sculptors in the Baroque era. This piece, no doubt influenced by the 17th century, was probably cast in Germany in the late 1800s.
