Cast in copper-patinated bronze and teeming with nude and semi-nude figures, this ambitious roundel refers to a number of legends and epics rooted in Egypt and Palestine. Notice the nude figure of Cleopatra being bitten by an asp in the lower righthand quadrant, for example, and the ancient domes of Jersusalem or Cairo in the upper left. The sculptor, Alfred Lanson -- famous for his depiction of "The Iron Age" -- created this work in Rome, no doubt influenced by the exoticism of the Middle East and the Mediterranean Sea.
