This panel was created to list and honor the annual winners of the Gordon Brown Memorial prize, given to a Yale junior "who most closely approaches the standard of good scholarship and character set by Francis Gordon Brown." The prize was established in 1913 and the panel may have been commissioned by the Brown family in that year. This edition of the panel lists all winners through 1936. The classical, idealized beauty of the central male figure was typical for its day, although the gauzy, knotted garment around his waist is especially fine. The sculptor may have been Peter Tyrson, who was born in Sweden and lived in Madison, CT not far from New Haven.
