"Source" and "Purification, a pair of artist's working prints, were designs for murals or bas-relief sculpture for the interior or facade of a building in the Art Deco era -- probably a water treatment building in the Baltimore area. Perhaps because the original drawings were executed in a chalk that was easily smudged, Mackall may have used these prints to present his design ideas, and to revise details (such as the laboratory scientist's collar) as needed. (The prints were framed by Ludwig Katzenstein in Baltimore.) Robert McGill Mackall lived most of his life in Baltimore; the Maryland Historical Society, the Morris Museum of Art and the Maryland State Archives own his work.
