Although this medal was designed in 1929 during the height of what we now call the Art Deco period, the two nude male figures holding a single torch seem more Art Nouveau than Moderne in character: they are sinuous and supple, rather than stylized and chiseled. This piece was sculpted by Joseph M. Miller, a Baltimorean born and raised who studied in Paris and won a number of prizes at world fairs and exhibitions across America. His works can be found at the U.S. Naval Academy and Johns Hopkins University and he created the monument to Confederate Women of Maryland.
