Two Figures by Moonlight

This glazed ashtray -- a rare and naive example of unabashed homoerotic art -- depicts two nude male figures by the side of a lake, cooly lit by a full moon and a scattering of stars. One is shown reclining and the other is shown kneeling on a nearby rock, both executed in black glaze over the kind of crazed blue-green glaze that was popular in the 1950s. The artist's hand is crude and amateurish, but the subject matter is quaintly bold and highly unusual for its time.
