For the 66th issue of the Society of Medalists in 1962, Carl Mose chose to symbolize what made "this land what it is -- through the individual power and vision of those who cleared it first, with primitive tools and their own strength." On one side of the medal, he shows a man clearing stumps from a field, and on the other he shows a family enjoying the fruits of his labor, surrounded by a field of wheat. Mose was an incredibly productive and active sculptor and teacher, participating in the Works Progress Administration, teaching at Washington University in St. Louis, and designing many monuments -- most in the Midwest and in Washington, D.C. The medal includes its storage box and descriptive brochure dating from 1962.
