Three Heads Artist: du Bois, Raoul PeneNationality: USA Time Period: Dimensions: 9" high x 12" wide Type of Work: Painting Medium: Oil on canvas board Painting Price: Upon request Plus shipping and insurance This charming oil sketch -- possibly a sketch prepared by Raoul Pene du Bois for a Broadway production -- depicts three classical figures: a turbanned black man flanked by two others: a nude white male figure with a wreathed head and gesticulating arm, and a female figure in Grecian drapery who is shown holding a covered urn. Famed as a scenic and costume designer for dozens of Broadway productions beginning in the 1930s, du Bois was one of a distinguished family of artists and designers going back to his grandfather, the art critic Henri Pene du Bois. He won Tony awards for scenic design (Wonderful Town), and for costume design (No, No Nanette); among the many other shows he designed were the Ziegfeld Follies (1934), Jumbo (1935), Du Barry was a Lady (1939), and Charley's Aunt (1953).
