Illustrative of America's fascination with the brawn and dignity of the manual laborer in the first half of the 20th century, this handsome sculpture shows a blacksmith resting from his work, seated on his anvil with his hammer to the side. Although this piece is not signed, it was clearly created by a skilled artist, working for one of the studios that created high-quality bookends and other decorative items using an innovative bronze cladding technique (essentially bronze laid over plaster).
