Bancroft was best known for his murals at the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Diego, but a short time later he executed this study for a mural – no doubt for a court house or library. Its rich Impressionistic brushwork and bright palette makes it a vivid find. The mural’s noble text in Latin – translated as “Work is Sweet and Conquers All” – would have seemed a suitable sentiment for a public space at the time.
