Remarkably strong and sensuous, this pair of rare, gilded cast iron panels may have been crafted for a pair of doors or a piece of furniture at the turn of the 20th century. The form and musculature of each male figure is strong and sure, and each is surrounded by symbols of their role in ancient mythology. Vulcan, of course, is pounding out lightning bolts on his anvil, while Chronos is seated near an hourglass and scythe, symbols of the passage of time and death. Together, this pair of panels makes a very strong statement.
