An exquisitely graceful and elegant bas relief is presented on this gold-patinaed medal, designed by Georg Lober for the American Watercolor Society in 1933. Lober's sculptures were widely exhibited and won many awards and prizes between 1911 and the 1930s, and he designed a large body of public memorials in the United States, Denmark, and Belgium. This medal depicts a kneeling nude female figure reaching out with her paintbrush with one hand and holding a flower with the other. Several features -- including her headress and the stylized water motif beneath her -- make this an Art Deco classic.
